Hardened Linux Project: EOL The Hardened Linux project is dead now. Autor/Author: Dipl.-Inform. (FH) Steffen Wendzel (Date/Datum: 080626-21:31, Hits: 1342)
After months of no commits I stopped working on the Hardened Linux Project. There is simply no need to still work on this Linux distribution project since other systems like OpenBSD or Fedora Code provide similar features. A big problem was the huge amount of time it took us to work on the packages (what was very boring).
We think that we should take care about much more interesting things than investing most of our time in compiling the new gcc with the new glibc version, stack smashing protection and PaX support.
Nevertheless, working on HL was a lot of fun and I think all developers learned a lot within the 1,75 years of development time.
Btw. I started the project in Sep-2006 under the name 'Wendzel-Linux'. In Nov-2006 new developers joined the project and we decided to rename it to 'Hardened Linux'. Hardened Linux was based on the famous Slackware distribution and provided some additional features like stack smashing protected software packages and a PaX/GRSecurity protected kernel. I also wrote a Slackware-backward-compatible package system called cpfos (crazy-packager-from-outa-space) for the system. You can find more about the project on the official website (hardenedlinux.sf.net) and here.
But I don't want to forget to thank all the people who contributed to the project. Specially Georgy Berdyshev (the person I made the 2nd project leader) and Marcus Moeller (project leader of the esays Linux distribution) who specially helped at the beginning of the project and also donated money to help buing a package build system used by the developers and who owns the hardened-linux.org domain!

PS. After we switched from the internal CVS repository that contained a few houndred commits and started to work with the sourceforge.net hosted subversion repository we finaly made 2.648 commits. This was my final shutdown commit. ____________
